Tech Noir

It’s that time of year again- the London Collections are looming, and seeing as my love of menswear has grown beyond comprehension the past six months, I AM WAY TOO EXCITED!
WGSN is my absolute savior when it comes to discovering new trends and new talent (especially considering my schedule no longer allows for extensive internet-trawling), and this morning they lead me to an interview with NEWGEN newbies Common. Designers Saif Bakir and Emma Hedlund describe their identity as “a fusion of London edge, Paris chic and Scandinavian minimalism”.
Their A/W 14/5 collection ‘Tech Nior’ (a hybrid genre of film combining both film noir and science fiction) looks to reflect a feel of “classic stylish Hollywood drama [taken] from the 1940’s and 50’s, fused with technical science fiction.” In their interview with WGSN they explain how this collection was inspired “by the engineered, polished and purified world of gattaca, where the past and the future are combined and interconnected to create a perfect balance of style and the avant-garde.”
Key pieces to look out for this season include their classics men’s shirt with water-repellant zips and knitted engineered collars, bomber jackets (complemented by their bold seasonal prints), and their unlined, double-faced wool overcoat. I’m not sure why exactly, but I’m feeling incredibly excited for these guys- HURRY UP JANUARY!
